 Audition Requirements for the 2013 - 2014 Jazz Bands

There is a place for students of all skill levels in the Jazz Program at SHS.  All students interested in participating at any level are encouraged to audition.  Although students are not turned away or cut from the jazz program at SHS auditions are required.  Students who are not selected for the Big Band Ensemble will be placed in the Lab Band. Auditions will be take place on 12/2 and 12/3 in the  SHS Band Room beginning at 3:00 PM. Students will sign-in upon arrival and play on a first come, first served basis, during the time blocks for each instrument type (see below). The schedule of times is tentative. Please plan to be flexible. Once you are done playing, you are free to leave. Results will be posted  at a later date.

Monday, December 2nd - Saxes first followed by Brass

Tuesday, December 3rd  - All Rhythm Section (drums, piano, guitar, bass)

Wednesday, December 4th - Make-ups Only

Audition Requirements for Winds (Saxes, Trumpet, and Trombone)

1. Concert Bb Blues scale with arpeggio plus one additional scale from the remaining six on the sheet. Your choice for the second scale. Scale sheets are located bleow.
2. Jazz excerpt 'Stellar', Measures 1-32, with the accompaniment track. Sheet Music and Audio Excerpts are located below.
3. Sight Reading

*Improvise 2 choruses in Bb blues. Play along track is located below. (Optional, not required)

Audition Requirements for Piano, Guitar, Bass

1. Concert Bb Blues scale with arpeggio plus one additional scale from the remaining six on the sheet. Your choice for the second scale. Scale sheets are located bleow.
2. Jazz excerpt 'Stellar', Measures 1-32, with the accompaniment track. Sheet Music and Audio Excerpts are located below. Play once through solo as written then play once through walking/comping over the changes if able.
3. Sight Reading

*Improvise 2 choruses in Bb blues. Play along track is located below. (Optional, not required)

Drums

1. Demonstrate rhythmic and “groove” competency in the following musical styles: Moderate Swing, “Double Time” Swing, Funk/Rock, and Bossa Nova. Lessons on the styles are available at the following link. http://www.vicfirth.com/education/drumset/GrooveEssentials.php
2. Jazz excerpt 'Stellar', Measures 1-32, with the accompaniment track. Sheet Music and Audio Excerpts are located below. Play once through solo as written then play once through filling/comping over the changes if able.

The audio files are in mp3 format. You can listen to the audio file directly on your computer, or use your computer to transfer the track to an mp3 player. The solo with background are on the tracks labeled "with solo." For your audition you will be playing  only with the background track. Listen to the solo for style and practice by using the link labeled "w/o solo."
